About Terry Ann Black, RN
Terry and her husband, Dr. Jeff Black, have lived in Lafayette since 1997. Terry is chair of the Senior Services Commission for the city of Lafayette. Terry and Jeff have two sons and five grandchildren, all living in the Bay Area. Terry enjoys reading, gardening, and swimming when she is not at Little League Games. She graduated from the Mountaintside Hostpital School of Nursing in Montclair, NJ, in 1965 and was an emergency room nurse for many years.
Terry's father-in-law died in an automobile accident in 1992. Terry and Jeff took care of his estate and went through all his belongings. Among his accumulated things, they came across a safe deposit key with a serial number, but bank names are not listed on these types of keys for security reasons. They know Jeff's father had stamps and coins, but try as they may, they never found the box. Now, 55 years later, she still has the key. That event created a second career.
After she and Jeff moved to California, she became a telephone advice nurse for Contra Costa health plan. When her mother dies, Terry says she discovered "Mom's will was dated, and although she had identified who should get certain things, many of the items were no longer around because she had given them away." Add that to what happened with her father-in-law, and Terry decided to write a small book to help others be better prepared.
Her book, entitled Caring is Not Enough: A Workbook for Emergency & End-of-Life Planning, is available on Amazon.com and contains 140 questions to guide the individual through the many things that need to be documented and available to family members once a person dies or in the event of a weather or other emergency. She said, "Be as ready as you can be! Your surviving loved ones will thank you, and believe me,if you lose a house in a mire and you have the completed booklet in a grab-and-go bag, it will be a huge help."
